Many people become managers with little or no training as to what managers do. Quite often if individuals are good operatives they are expected to become good managers. However, the skills and behaviours required to be effective are quite different. As people move up in the organisation, they are likely to spend less time selling the product or dealing with customers and more time managing people.

It is essential therefore that they develop perspectives on management which will enable them to continue to be effective in a changing organisation. They need to understand:
